Sphere8 had an amazing night out last week, as we attended the 2016 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards at the Old Truman Brewery. Now in its eighth year, these awards are a globally recognised competition dedicated to the design of food and beverage spaces - so we were obviously thrilled to be involved in a short-listed project with Virgile & Partners for the Birmingham Harvey Nichols restaurant.
On the night we showed up at the Old Truman Brewery just in time to catch the opening of the Tom Dixon Sample Sale, which was also held there this weekend. A great chance to browse the collection and pick up some bargains! We then headed round the corner and entered the event to discover an amazing open-plan space punctuated by 4 bars, a central stage and a restaurant area down one side. The entire space was white and minimalist, making the most of it's stylish industrial location.

Each bar was designed and curated by a different team, offering a range of different exciting refreshments - from Sangria cocktails and Caipirinhas to bespoke rosemary and thyme Gin & Tonics and exciting vodka cocktails with rhubarb and homemade honey! Each bar also had a reveal at some point in the night - pulling back their minimalist facades to unveil each team's take on the 'street' theme.
This 'street' theme was perfectly reflected in the amazing food by Thaikhun - inspired by the street-food of Bangkok, this brilliant restaurant catered for all guests with a huge variety of Thai food in different forms. Pronounced ‘tycoon’, the name celebrates the street food sellers in Thailand who are real tycoons – owning and running their own successful food businesses and leading the way in Thai street food.
